In experiments with root cuttings of Prunus avium best results were obtained when cuttings were inserted with the proximal 2–3 cm exposed to the air. All lengths and diameters of root cuttings were successful (i.e. produced at least one sucker), and all successful cuttings produced roots at their distal ends.

Received 26 April 1990.
