Some Effects of Exposure and Frost on Selected Birch Progenies
Department of Forestry, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen Scotland AB9 2UU
Progeny tests of silver and downy birch, despite being severely affected by adverse winter weather conditions, yielded encouraging early results. Heritabilities for both height growth and resistance to exposure were high enough to indicate that selection on either a family or an individual tree basis would produce worthwhile gains.
Preliminary trials on cold hardiness of birch showed that even trees of diverse origin are unlikely to be affected by autumn frost conditions.
