Influence of the Silvicultural Treatment (High forest or Coppice-with-standards) on Oak above-ground Biomass Distribution in central France
Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique Station de Sylviculture, Ardon, F-45160 Olivet France
Above-ground dry biomass distribution was investigated for 37 oaks from high forest or from coppice-with-standards.
Biomass distribution by diameter class follows the same pattern for both treatments: as the trees grow older and larger, a higher percentage of dry matter accumulates in the larger sized structures, whereas smaller parts (shoots, twigs) increase proportionally more slowly.
In high forest stands the proportion of biomass in the stem is 83 per cent, with 17 per cent in the crown. In coppice with standards this varies more with age, but the mean proportion in the stem is 64 per cent.
Vertical biomass distribution profiles illustrate the development of tree form with age: in coppice-with-standards, growth is free from competition of neighbouring trees and the crown grows more rapidly in relation to the stem, but high forest trees grow in competition and the form of the profile remains constant throughout their development.
