Distribution of the Green Spruce Needle Miner Epinotia nanana Treitschke (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) within and between Trees at Redesdale, Northumberland

A. J. HAYES and V. M. SHIPP *

Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Edinburgh

Differences were observed in the intensities of infestation of E. nanana on crops of Norway and Sitka spruce of different ages at Redesdale Forest, Northumberland. Attacks were more serious in stands on northerly aspects. Norway spruce was more intensely infested than was Sitka spruce, attacks being more severe in older stands. Attacks occurred more frequently on suppressed and subdominant trees. The intensity of infestation increased progressively with increasing height of foliage up to 3.5 m above ground level. Attack occurred preferentially on current and 1-year-old needles. Continental experience with this pest suggests that the risk of cumulative long-term damage is slight.
