Forestry in Dumfries and Galloway

E. J. M. DAVIES

Conservator, Forestry Commission Dumfries

The Dumfries and Galloway Region has seen an extraordinary transformation in the last 35 years during which the area under trees has risen from 4 per cent to 22 per cent of the land surface. Both productivity and production are climbing steeply and the new forests provide substantial benefits to the tourist industry and over a thousand jobs. It is expected that about 30 per cent of the land surface will be under trees by the year 2000 but a number of major technical problems lie ahead.
