Recently discovered historical evidence of the development of coppice woods in the New Forest indicates that this system of management declined during the 15th and 16th centuries. This trend coincided with economic changes and an increased demand for naval timber. It is suggested that the unenclosed woods in the Forest are of a natural origin.
