General Management Principles for Nature Consrvation in British Woodlands
Nature Conservancy Council, George House Cambridgeshire
The management of British woodlands is partly determined by the need to maintain wildlife and protect features of scientific interest; but the requirements of nature conservation often conflict with other objectives of management. This paper summarises the fundamental objectives of nature conservation in British woodlands, then proposes 15 principles which can form the basis of integrating nature conservation into woodland management policies at all levels. Eleven woodland types are discussed as examples which demonstrate both their value for nature conservation and the application of the general principles. The forestry provisions of the Plan for the Chilterns seem a successful local precedent for this approach.
