Some Short-term Effects of Lime and Fertilizers on a Sitka Spruce Plantation

I. Field Studies on the Forest Litter and the Uptake of Nutrients by the Trees

S. N. ADAMS and D. A. DICKSON

Agricultural and Chemistry Department, Queen's University of Belfast, and Ministry of Agriculture Northern Ireland

A factorial experiment tested the effects of three rates of ground limestone and two rates of NPK fertilizer on two Sitka spruce plantations on poorly drained soils in Northern Ireland. Eight months after application, N and K fertilizer had largely disappeared from the litter layer and had increased the nutrient status of the trees. By contrast, P fertilizer had remained in the litter layer and had not been taken up by the trees. Nine months after application, lime had remained in the litter layer and had significantly reduced the foliar N and P concentration of the trees.
