Recreation Site Pressures and their variation with Site Location

N. H. ATKINSON and J. C. HETHERINGTON

Department of Forestry and Wood Science, Untversity College of North Wales

A computer simulation model is being developed in the Department of Forestry at Bangor as an aid to forest recreation management problems. Observational site survey work was carried out in the summer of 1971 to provide data for the model. Some results of the work are presented in this article. Visitor behaviour patterns are described and die main conclusions are that surveys must include estimates of length of stay and must not generalise on times of peak site activity; visitors require more positive facilities and information services and site design should correspond with picnicking habits.
