Study of Response of Certain Coniferous Species to Light Intensity
The use of shade-tolerant species in the second rotation, especially associated with site amelioration, may permit important increases in productivity. The paper describes investigations of the optimum light intensities in the nursery for six species(Norway and Sitka spruces, European silver fir, Grand fir, Douglas fir, and Western hemlock). The experiment spanned the range from 6·25 to 100 per cent of full light, the shade conditions being controlled by means of lath cover. The responses are presented in terms of germination, survival, root and shoot growth (length and weight), needle length, collar diameter, and various measures of sturdiness.
It is apparent that a classification into degrees of shade tolerance is an over-simplification but as the experiments were not extended into the forest, it could not be concluded which measure of sturdiness had greatest validity.
