Forestry and the Landscape1

J. D. MATTHEWS, Professor of Forestry

University of Aberdeen

A short paper pointing out that our landscape is not natural but has undergone great changes over the centuries. We must protect the best in it including the improvement of hedgerow timber particularly the elms, restore land made derelict and practice the skills of landscaping possessed by past generations. In creating the landscape of the future, the professional forester has an important role to play.
