Variation in Lodgepole Pine with reference to Provenances Planted in Great Britain and Ireland1

L. ROCHE

Forester, Research Division, British Columbia Forest Service Victoria, B.C.

Variation in growth habit and bark type of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Douglas) in its native habitat is described and illustrated with photographs. Needle morphology is assessed from plantation samples and some of the problems associated with the assessment of variation are discussed. The problem of ensuring that imported seed is collected from the right stands is considered.
