The Nature Conservancy

This paper traces the history of silvicultural management in the New Forest prior to the establishment of the first plantations devoted solely to the production of oak for shipbuilding in the early eighteenth century, and considers the origin of the present structure of the unenclosed woodlands of the Forest.
