The Problems which Face the Forest Manager
Forestry Commission
The main problem in east Scotland is the conversion of plantations, with a rather narrow age range, into forests. This requires a prolonged interim stage with limited objectives and flexibility of management moving towards normality. Management must often be by stands of undefined extent and the criteria of harvesting must be on quality and size rather than age. Whatever principles of management are laid down, they must be firmly and adequately based on sound silviculture.
