THE MAXIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT OF WOOD
Forest Products Research Laboratory Princes Risborough
The maximum moisture contents of seventeen timbers have been determined and compared with calculated values, assuming a density of 1.5 g. per c.c. for the wood substance. The converse approach, in which the maximum moisture contents are used to determine basic densities is also discussed. With the present set of timbers, basic density can usually be estimated to within about 1 or 2 per cent., and with the aid of an empirical relationship between basic and dry densities, the latter can usually be estimated to within 3 or 4 per cent. Although most of the timbers attained their maximum moisture content within a few days, exceptional timbers may require a period of several weeks or even months before the absorption of water is complete.
