A LITTLE-KNOWN BORER IN IMPORTED SOFTWOOD; SERROPALPUS BARBATUS SCHALL. (COLEOPTERA, MELANDRYIDAE). REVIEW OF LITERATURE AND RECENT OCCURRENCES IN GREAT BRITAIN
Forest Products Research Laboratory
A brief account is given of the biology and world distribution of this comparatively unimportant timber insect, which is responsible for a type of damage indistinguishable from that caused by wood-wasps of the family Siricidae, and with which it may have been confused in the past. The presence of such damage is of interest in connexion with the recently intensified quarantine measures in Australia to prevent the introduction of Sirex spp. in imported timber. Recent records have been associated in most cases with whitewood (Abies spp.) imported from Yugoslavia, but there is no evidence that this beetle has become established or is an important timber pest in this country.
