THE POSSIBILITIES OF IMPROVING FOREST TREES

C. SYRACH LARSEN

ArboreUt, Hersbolm Denmark

A plea is made for attacking the problem on original lines. After stating the more important methods of approach, the article, which is illustrated by two photographs, explains briefly how the use of grafts can overcome the inherent difficulties of space and of time in undertaking artificial pollination. The establishment of plantations of trees propagated vegetatively and therefore of known genetic character has in Denmark afforded a means of preserving the presumed valuable genotypes and also helped in the difficult problem of their identification and opened up wide opportunities for further research. On a larger scale such plantations, formed from `lite trees, provide seed for practical purposes. The article follows the lines of the address given by the author to the British Association at Birmingham in 1950, and ends with some words of encouragement to research workers in Great Britain.

Received 20 September 1950.
